A major addition is the revamped UI and menu system that makes the whole game seem a lot more polished.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Work on DropZone continues at a stop-start pace largely due to the current release cycle in work.  Any free time I do have I try to make some progress on the game and I&#8217;m pretty happy with how its going.  I&#8217;m pretty confident in the game design that it&#8217;s a decent distraction in its current state but a few more tweaks should see major improvements in playability.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve got some metrics tracking implement which is working out great and it&#8217;s super easy to use.  As we use metrics a lot in work for design I&#8217;ve come to realise how useful it can be as a tool for the game designer.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Creating the art for this game has probably been a bigger challenge than the actual programming of it.  Given I&#8217;ve got a design background you&#8217;d imagine game art would come naturally.  Unfortunately I&#8217;ve found myself slow at the process and I&#8217;ve not been able to produce consistently good artwork.  But the designer in me realised that this shortcoming could be exploited, that I should design within the constraints.  I mean, thats what indies do, right?</p>
<p>So with this constraint I considered how I could approach an art style that I could quickly develop but that would also work stylistically.  What I&#8217;ve developed so far is a big deviation from the original design but I think it meshes well with the gameplay, it definitely sets a more serious tone which is good and bad.  It&#8217;s not final, but here&#8217;s a quick peek of how it looks in the editor.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I&#8217;ve attached my latest build of the game below.  Most of the basic functionality is implemented and I also have it working on iPad.  One issue that I ran into was using Unity&#8217;s built in OnGUI function which doesn&#8217;t handle multitouch so I&#8217;m going to re-do the controls to be multitouch friendly.</p>
<p>As part of reviewing GUI options I came across <a href="http://www.ex-dev.com/ex2d/">ex2d</a>.  I&#8217;m looking into using it as a sprite solution across the entire game to minimise the work I need to do on this front.  Over the next 1-2 weeks I&#8217;m planning a short investigation into how well it performs and I&#8217;ll update depending on how that goes.  At $25 it&#8217;s a steal compared to SpriteManager2 and it looks like the ex2d workflow will better suit my own pipeline.</p>
<p>Game Design is still a bit murky at the minute but that is one of the joys of working on my own, radical overhauls of how the game will play can be done without upsetting myself too much and I&#8217;m always willing to do it if it&#8217;s in the best interests of the game.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Ok, long time no update. My bad, I&#8217;ve let the blog fall by the wayside for the past few months&#8230; or since the year started to be honest.  2011 has been pretty busy I learned C#, Unity, a bit of 3D modeling and on top of that I got a job at a game studio.  On top of all this I&#8217;ve started work on my masters game so 2011 has been pretty eventful.</p>
<p>Over the next few weeks I&#8217;ll try add a few posts about the masters project to date, how I ended up with the game I&#8217;m developing and how development has gone so far.  Overall I&#8217;d say that Unity is an amazing engine especially for prototyping 3D games, compared to UDK which can be quite impenetrable, Unity gives you access to an entire engine and the community support for it is amazing.</p>
<p>For now I&#8217;m going to leave you with a link to a very early prototype of my game- the mouse controls are ok but it feels much nicer on the iPad. Here she is:</p>
